How trans island people will save the world
We were there long before the tides rose
long before they drowned themselves
they were petulant.
knee deep in warm water
and blind to harm of their greed
to the blood in their idiocy

so they pushed us under
step on our bodies to stay dry
and did not prepare
but we were ready.
by the time the oceans swelled, we had built a world under the shore.
we have transformed ourselves since the dawn of time
moths. cyborgs. mermaids.
like clay, how we molded one another,
callused hands glide on wet skin.

engineer gills
perform alchemy
learn how to breathe underwater
so when the water rose, we were ready.
and they cried, screamed
pointing angry fingers as they drowned
as if blame would save them.
and still.
we swam to the shoreline
and carried their limp, flailing bodies to the water.
